This is one of the only fully off-trail activities in Denali, and it's the ONLY survival-focused activity offered in Alaska. It is led by an expert survivalist guide who has survived off the land alone for weeks on end. If "Into the Wild" is part of what brought you to Alaska, this is the best way to get an idea of what Chris McCandless's life was really like in the Denali backcountry. Eat the edible plants that he ate and learn the not-so-edible ones he ate that resulted in his demise. This is not something to be missed.
- Embark on a night out in Downtown Manhattam
- Visit several bars and rooftops that you may not find on your own
- Commentary on the commerce, culture, and history of Downtown
- Explore on foot, which lets you get to know the city intimately
What To Expect
We will pick you up from your hotel and take you to an area only a few miles from Chris McCandless's infamous mishap chronicled in Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild". From there, your guide will take you off-trail into the Denali boreal forest, exploring with you and teaching you about the wild plants, animals, geology, local history, and more.
When your guide decides you've reached a good spot, they will stop and begin teaching you survival skills that have been used for countless generations by both the indigenous Athabaskan peoples and the numerous pioneers and survivalists who have come to this rugged landscape to test themselves against its harsh conditions. This full-day activity will go in-depth into how to survive in the Alaskan backcountry. You'll come away not only with a closer connection and understanding of this land and the people who inhabit it but also actual skills that you'll be able to use if you ever find yourself in a survival situation – Alaska or elsewhere. You've traveled thousands of miles to get here. Don't limit your vacation to what's on the surface.
